Error installing SQL2005 SP2

I'm trying to install SP2 for SQL 2005 on Win 2003 sp1. Right now 2005 is installed as a named instance with a 2000 instance running on the same box.

Can you please check to see if you have the appropriate permissions for the DTSSVCPERF.INI. The error seems to indicate there is a problem copying the file.

|||upon closer inspection I seem to be missing that file for some reason... how do I get it back?
|||Do you have any other server where in you can check to see if you can copy it from there?. I am not sure how the file went missing in the first place. If you dont have any other server then I would suggest that you perform a fresh installation of SQL 2005 on a test box and copy it to your production server.

Error installing SQL Express 2005 SP1 on XP Home/SP2

As the subject says, I am getting an error installing SQL Express 2005 SP1 on XP Home/SP2. I have never had a previous version of SQL server installed. I have never had Visual Studio installed. I have tried extracting the setup files and running from a different directory. I have tried installing the advanced package as well with the same results.

When I run the setup, the Client and support files are successfully installed. It then goes on to the system analysis, where I get one warning about my hardware but I have checked the help file and my system appears to meet the system requirements. After I click Next from this window is where I get the error,
"Error writing to file: Access is denied.
. Verify that you have access to that directory."

After looking into the log files I see this,

Are you familar with using regedit? If so, can you post the contents of the "BootstrapDir" and "WYukonBootstrapDir" values (if they exist), in the "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90" key?

That is the correct value. The custom action should be running with the credentials of the user running setup, which in this case would be your logged in account. Setup is trying to create a file in a "Bin" subfolder of that directory. Could you use Windows Explorer to navigate to that folder and see if you are able to create that directory? Also check to see if it the folder already exists and if it has any files. If so, try to delete the entire folder. Let me know what you find out, thanks!

Thanks for the follow-up. Did you notice if any files were there already in the directory? Were you able to create the "Bin" folder if it didn't exist? Can you also try to create a file in the "Bin" subfolder?

The logs look like it is trying to create the right file in the right spot, so if you are able to create files by hand there is a mystery going on here.

Sorry it took so long getting back to you. Actually as it turns out, I cannot create a file in the Bin directory. I am logged in as a user with Administrative rights but not as Administrator. Could that be the problem?|||

That would be the cause of the problem, although I'm not sure how the permissions got screwed up. You shouldn't need to run as the Administrator account, running with an account that is a member of the Administrators group is good enough.

You could try logging in as Administrator and deleting the folder, which would delete the bogus ACL's on it. Then log back in again with your regular account and try setup once more. I assume this will work since setup doesn't have problems creating files in the other folders under "Setup Bootstrap", it seems localized to just the "Bin" folder.

|||Ok, I finally got it installed. It is important to note that I am running Windows XP Home. You cannot login as Administrator in Home unless in safe mode. Here is what I did,

1) Run the setup for SQL Server Express 2005. When it fails, restart the computer in Safe Mode.
2) Login to Safe Mode as the Administrator.
3) In File Explorer right click on the c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server directory. Change the permissions to full control for all administrators.
4) Restart into normal mode and login as the same user you originally started the installation with.
5) Re-run the installation, without uninstalling the failed installation.
6) It should install without a problem now.

I am going to assume that this is a problem with XP Home not allowing the use of the Administrator account in normal mode. If anyone ever figures out exactly what the problem is I would love to know.

Thanks for the follow-up. Did you notice if any files were there already in the directory? Were you able to create the "Bin" folder if it didn't exist? Can you also try to create a file in the "Bin" subfolder?

The logs look like it is trying to create the right file in the right spot, so if you are able to create files by hand there is a mystery going on here.

Sorry it took so long getting back to you. Actually as it turns out, I cannot create a file in the Bin directory. I am logged in as a user with Administrative rights but not as Administrator. Could that be the problem?|||

That would be the cause of the problem, although I'm not sure how the permissions got screwed up. You shouldn't need to run as the Administrator account, running with an account that is a member of the Administrators group is good enough.

You could try logging in as Administrator and deleting the folder, which would delete the bogus ACL's on it. Then log back in again with your regular account and try setup once more. I assume this will work since setup doesn't have problems creating files in the other folders under "Setup Bootstrap", it seems localized to just the "Bin" folder.

|||Ok, I finally got it installed. It is important to note that I am running Windows XP Home. You cannot login as Administrator in Home unless in safe mode. Here is what I did,

1) Run the setup for SQL Server Express 2005. When it fails, restart the computer in Safe Mode.
2) Login to Safe Mode as the Administrator.
3) In File Explorer right click on the c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server directory. Change the permissions to full control for all administrators.
4) Restart into normal mode and login as the same user you originally started the installation with.
5) Re-run the installation, without uninstalling the failed installation.
6) It should install without a problem now.

I am going to assume that this is a problem with XP Home not allowing the use of the Administrator account in normal mode. If anyone ever figures out exactly what the problem is I would love to know.

I am installing SQL 2005 on a two node 2003 SP1 cluster and get an error
after selecting components and I have narrowed it down to Shared Tools. The
error is:
"The drive specified cannot be used for program location. Program files
must be installed on a valid local disk available on all cluster nodes. The
valid values are"
The help icon gives a LinkID of 20467, but I can't find any info on that.
I'm installing to C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server, which the Data
Files feature seems happy to install to. If only Shared Tools wasn't a
required component!
Anyone run into this or know what can cause it?
Which drive letters do you have on each node? Which ones are local disks
and which are in the shared array? Which disks are configured in the
cluster group you are specifying for the failover cluster instance?

drive, although I am not able to get to that point in the installation to
specify the resource group yet, although it is online and functioning. Q is
the quorum and it's working fine.

drive between all of them. On a 32bit cluster it's usually C or D. If all
your nodes have a C: drive in common then you should be fine. Look in the
SQLSetup_machinename_WI.log file for more information.

I had created an "Unused Drives" resource group to keep my unused physical
disk resources from becoming corrupted but hadn't brought them online. My
solution was to bring all physical disk resources online while running SQL
2005 setup. Keep in mind, it wasn't the SQL disk that was offline. It was a
physical disk resource that I planned to use later for something like
Exchange or file sharing. I hope this saves someone else a bottle or two of
Asprin!

clustered host". Here is the fun part: The installer fails on a clustered
system, even if you are trying to do a stand-alone install. And it fails if

We have a reporting server with SP1.
We tried to install SP2 while we were logged in with the domain admin account.
The installation program says 'please wait while windows configures
microsoft sql server 2000 reporting services enterprise edition' then we get
the error

Are you using a user account for the ReportServer windows services? In that
case, change the startup option for the service to use a LocalSystem account,
stop the service and then try to install the SP2. When the SP2 installation
program ends, go back to the service properties and change back the account.
Finnally restart your server.

Error Installing Service Pack 1

Hi all,
I tried to upgrade a clients site to Sp1 and got the following error:
"SQL Setup failed to connect to the database service for server
configuration. Refer to the Server error logs and setup logs for more
detailed error information."
I was just wondering if anyone else has come across this error and know any
ways to fix it?
Also does the account I am logged onto (or Term Served into) the box with
require access to the Configuration Database or the Database Server?
And I can't find any documentation on what security level is required for
applying the Service Pack ie. SQL System Administrator or just DBO of the
config database?

Angus LoganJust like the original setup, the service pack uses integrated security to
update the ReportServer database. You need to have dbo privileges to the
database on the machine where setup is being run.

Error in the Event Viewer - Database log truncated: Database: DBNAME

Hi,

I am with a problem in my SQL Server 2000 SP1 Database, called Siade.
A job runned with success but in the Event Viewer I saw an error with
this message:
" The description for Event ID ( 17055 ) in Source ( MSSQL$SIADE )
cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. The following information is part of the event: 18278,
Database log truncated: Database: Siade."

So I would like to know how the job was succesfully, and there was an
error in Event Viewer?
Is this possible?
Ah! The job has these 3 steps:
Step 1- exec dbcc_all_dbreindex
Step 2- backup log Siade with truncate_only
Step 3- DBCC SHRINKDATABASE (Siade,0)
Please, reply me! This error is appearing everytime the job is executed and I want to know if I can ignore it...

Q1 DBCC SHRINKDATABASE (Siade,0) will attempt to shrink the DB Siade to 0% free space! Is the Siade DB any kind of normal production DB (with new data inserted, updated, etc.)?
{If so, 0% free space as a target is likely not the most efficient choice possible. In low DB freespace enviroments any, and possibly many kinds of inserts, may require more extents to be allocated to the DB before a given insert may complete. Triggering a resource intensive DB growth event in this manner may be expected to not only delay the triggering insert itself, but also to generally degrade the server's user responsiveness (until the growth event is completed).

Comment1 Reindexing consumes a Db's free log space (if 0% free space exists in a given DB at the time of reindexing , potentially many many more extents may need to be allocated to grow the DB Log (before the reindexing may complete).

Comment2 In general, Backups are prevented from occuring if certain kinds of schema locks are present (such as those that are applied when growing a DB with 0% free working space to allow reindexing to complete).

In SP2 when you dismiss the "Invalid Login Information" dialog, you will be taken back to the grid. The actual error message should be show in the grid. What error are you receiving, you may need to resize the "Status" column to see the full error.

Error in installing SP1 or sp2

I have a sql server 2005 developer edition installed on my windows xp system.

I apply sql server 2005 sp1 then sp2 all does successfully.

Now I have installed same sql server 2005 developer edition on windows 2003 server

When I installed sp1 or sp2 i get the following error

Invalid Login Information

Your account information could not be verified for one or more instances.

Ensure that you can connect to all the selected instances using the account information provided.

To proceed further deselect the instances to which connectivity cannot be established.

OK

I have done every thing.PRovided sql server as well as windows authentication.

I can easily login by both.But Can't able to apply any Service pack even I uninstalled or reinstall the product.

Please help me what can i do ?

I am simply getting the invalid authentication error I don't know Why it happens ?|||
