Error installing SQL Server 2005 Upgrade Advisor

I'm getting a Windows Installer error when attempting to run the Upgrade Advisor setup package (SQLUASetup.exe). The error message reads:

"This installation package cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service. You must install a Windows service pack that contains a newer version of the Windows Installer service."

The machine is running Windows 2000 sp4. Both the .net framework v2 and Windows Installer 3.0 have been installed.

Any suggestions?

You need to be running Windows Installer 3.1. You can find it here:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=893803

|||

I'm also having problems installing the Upgrade Advisor on a W2K server running SQL Server 2000. .net Framework 2.0 is installed as is Windows Installer 3.1.

I'm getting the follwing error message: "The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2755."

Any ideas what might be the problem here ?

|||

You need to install Windows 2003 SP1, .NET frameworks 2.0 before installing Upgrade Advisor

You can refer http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms144256.aspx

If you are still seeing install errors, you gather verbose log and post it in this newsgroup. To create verbose log:

Ex: msiexec /i SQLUASetup.msi /l*v e:\temp\verbose.log

Thanks

Error installing sql server 2005 express edition

I am trying to install sql server 2005 express edition. But i get an error stating that

sql server setup unexpectedly failed. For more information review the detup summary log file in %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\summary.txt

Summary.txt looks like this.It has only these 3 lines of information nothing else other this, which i have seen in many posts.

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 9.00.3042.00

OS Version : Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
Time : Tue Apr 03 22:36:33 2007

I am using windows xp. Probably many of you might have had this problem.Could anyone please provide me with some help. Thanks in advance.

Are there any files in the folder at C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Files? These are the detailed log files. If there are any files with similar date/time stamps as the summary.txt file, take a look at those to see if anything stands out.

Thanks for your reply. There are 2 more folders (Files and Hotfix). under Files there was a file named

SQLSetup0025_ARUN_Core.txt. I am not sure what these files mean and there are few more files under Hotfix. Any suggestions?

Error Installing SQL Server 2000

I have a problem installing SQL Server 2000 standard edition in a Windows 2003 Server , when I try to setup there is a message saying :
" You cannot install SQL server 2000 sp 2 and below in this operating system " and the installation stops .

I have tried to run sp3 before the installation but obviously It doesnt work . I think the solution is something like updating the setup program to make it work in Windows 2003 Server , when I see the system requirements on the box it says that I can install SQL server 2000 in w2003 .

what can I do ?

thanks a lot for your help .That was not an error message. We have several DB servers with SQL 2000 running on Win2003. It's a warning message telling you that you have to patch up to sp2 or later to run SQL on Win2003. It should let you install SQL 2000 after that message. If you have problems, it's probably something else. How could you have sp3 installed on the server if you haven't installed SQL on there? I'm just taking what you said in your post.|||yes , It has to be something else . Of course I could not install sp3 because SQL server is not running .|||I got the same thing - ignore it. Just make sure you install SP3 and you'll be fine. After installing, you can check the event viewer, and see that it won't start the service until you apply the proper service pack.|||As I am saying the installation stops , and the setup dialog disappears , Nothing gets installed , I am started to think there is some problem with the windows 2003 server setup CD , I do not know ... any ideas ? I have tried to install SQL server from two different CDs and It doesnt work . Thats why I think the problem is with the Windows 2003 CD.|||you may need to update your msi installer. some times this can become corrupt. make sure you look up information on how to update the msi. i have never done this before but found that it could be a solution to your problem. one more thing BACK UP!!!! before you do this. Sharepoint (not sure if that's what is referred to by "share point" up
above) is installed and working on the box in question. Any thoughts?
KenWell, I appear to have worked around it by uninstalling SharePoint
(both the "portal" and the "services" flavors). I reran setup, and it
worked that time. Luckily I didn't need SP on this box (yeah, yeah,
and it's still beta . . . )

Ken,
I tried a few times to get Reporting Services 2005 and Windows
SharePoint Services 2 working on the same box and failed with earlier
builds.
The specific problem you are seeing, I guess, is that say
http://localhost/reports and http://localhost/reportserver need to be
excluded paths (if I remember the terminology correctly in WSS2) on a
SharePoint server.
You need to find the Managed Paths screen to create the excluded
paths.
That's the first step, I think.

Error Installing Service Pack 1

Hi all,
I tried to upgrade a clients site to Sp1 and got the following error:
"SQL Setup failed to connect to the database service for server
configuration. Refer to the Server error logs and setup logs for more
detailed error information."
I was just wondering if anyone else has come across this error and know any
ways to fix it?
Also does the account I am logged onto (or Term Served into) the box with
require access to the Configuration Database or the Database Server?
And I can't find any documentation on what security level is required for
applying the Service Pack ie. SQL System Administrator or just DBO of the
config database?
Thanks in advance.
Angus LoganJust like the original setup, the service pack uses integrated security to
update the ReportServer database. You need to have dbo privileges to the
database on the machine where setup is being run.

form displays only a cancel button. Wait... Go get a cup of coffee... Tell
the joke of the day to the guy in the next cube... The continue button will
be displayed in a Microsoft second. I think this bad design by Bill's boys.
The cancel button should not be enabled until the install software figures
out what it's going to allow. A lot of folks probably hit Cancel
prematurely.

Does your server have MDAC 2.8 SP1 installed (It is a pre-req for SQL Server 2005 setup)? To see the version of MDAC installed, you can do the following.

1. Start ->Run and type "regedit".

2. In the registry tree in the left panel, drill down to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DataAccess\Version. The version key should have "2.81.1117.0".

If MDAC version on the machine is less than 2.8 SP1, then you should go to download center and installing Mdac 2.8 sp1 redist from there.

If you have Mdac 2.8 sp1 installed, then can you provide the following info?

1. Are you an admin on the box?

2. What is the OS language although it shouldn't matter.

3. What is the language of SQL Server 2005 you are installing?

4. How are you installing it: Double-clicking setup.exe or through command line parameters passed to setup.exe?

5. Have you done previous installs of SQL Server 2005 on the machine?

6. Is the SQL Server 2005 you are installing an RTM release, if so which SKU?

Error in SQL 2005 Maintenance Plan

I'm trying to setup a nightly backup to a remote computer using an SQL
Server 2005 Maintenance Plan. It keeps giving an error. I've narrowed
the cause down to an execute command...
EXECUTE master.dbo.xp_create_subdir
N'\\\\10.2.32.15\\Backup_SQL2005\\\\IOC'
which is giving the error below...
Msg 22048, Level 16, State 1, Line 0
xp_create_subdir() returned error 123, 'The filename, directory name,
or volume label syntax is incorrect.'
I am signed on as administrator on both computers. I'm able to map a
drive though the Windows Explorer and create a subdirectory on the
remote machine.
I have also tried...
EXECUTE master.dbo.xp_create_subdir N'\\10.2.32.15\Backup_SQL2005\IOC'
EXECUTE master.dbo.xp_create_subdir N'\\GOMB-BACKUP\Backup_SQL2005\IOC'
EXECUTE master.dbo.xp_create_subdir N'G:\IOC' (after mapping a drive)
This works...
EXECUTE master.dbo.xp_create_subdir N'C:\IOC'
...but of course it's on the local computer.
Any ideas why this doesn't work?
Thanks,
CThe stuff you do in Explorer uses the Windows account *you* have logged in w
ith. The stuff that SQL
Server does uses the Service account for the SQL Server service. Verify that
the service account has
proper permissions.

How do I give the Service account access to create remote
subdirectories?

As you would to for any other Windows user. (Which if you don't know is
a question for a Windows newsgroup. I hardly know it myself.)
Note howver, that you cannot do this if SQL Server is running under
Local System. In this case you need to change which account under which
SQL Server is running. To do this, right-click My Computer, select Manager,
find Services, and there find the SQL Server service. Double-click, and
log-on information is on the Log On tab.
If you are using SQL 2005, you should use the SQL Computer Manager instead.

Error in MSDE Toolkit

Hello,
I am using the MSDE deployment Toolkit (RC) to deploy my application. I have my application, the setup project and the installer project in my solution. The installer project has embedded sql files for database creation and dropping only (which I create
d using the enterprise manager). Now when I run the setup, MSDE installs fine but during my applications setup I get the following error message:
"An exception occured in the OnAfterInstall event handler of PostInstall.CustomInstallActions. --> Value cannot be null."
I looked on web but couldnt really find anything about this error message.
Please suggest something. I wanted to post the SQL here but the message reached it's max count.
Thanks
dev
Hello dev,
Did you write the code that is running in the OnAfterInstall event? Or are
you using the sample code that comes with the Toolkit?
Can you post the code you're using? I don't need to seee the SQL at this
point.
Cheers,

Error in MSDE setup

When I install MSDE, I am getting an error and the installation stops. In
the log file that is created it looks like this:
Executing "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL
Server\80\Tools\Binn\cnfgsvr.exe -V 1 -M 1 -U sa -I "CDC29999" -Q
"SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS""
Setup failed to configure the server. Refer to the server error logs and
setup error logs for more information.
Action ended 10:31:21: InstallFinalize. Return value 3.
When I look in the server log, it gives me the same message. "Refer to the
server error logs and setup error logs for more information." Big help!
My setup.ini file looks like this:
[Options]
INSTANCENAME = "CDC"
SAPWD = "CDC2003"
I checked the Windows event log and found this:
The MSSQL$CDC service failed to start due to the following error:
MSSQL$CDC is not a valid Win32 application.
I think this is the problem, but have no idea what is going on or how to fix
this.
Any ideas?
Thanks
LanceTurns out there is a problems with some MS products that if there is a file
on the root of C drive called "Program" then it fails when it trys to start
the service.
